| Recovery is like climbing a ladder. Rung by painful rung, you do the work. Step by step, you renew your mind, change your attitudes, learn something new about yourself. Sometimes, I slid back down and had to start over again. Most of the time, the past tries to hold you back. Old attitudes I learned as a child kept me down. Old emotions pieced me through. Old pain is the weight that I carried as I climbed, rung after rung. Finally, one day, I hope to break free of those old ideas. Every thing will be changed because I have changed. Meanwhile, I continue to climb. |

| Artist Note: This image is created out of construction paper and Prismacolor pencil. Each piece of the image, each section of the face, each finger, each finger nail is drawn individually and glued together. I liked the irony of constructing myself out of construction paper and glue. |
