GOLIATH’S CHALLENGE I Samuel 17 The giant stood alone before the army of God shouting out his threats everyday. The challenge of his voice fell on trembling ears. They’d hear him but they’d all turned away. He’d say, “I defy the army of God,” as he waved his sword into the air. He’d say, “Send me a man, we’ll fight until one dies.” He waited, but no one would dare. Curses after threats, mockery and shame kept ringing out all over the land. Day after day the giant mocked the name of God. All those mighty men but no one took a stand. He’d say, “I defy the army of God!” as he waved his sword into the air. He’d say, “Send me a man, we’ll fight until one dies.” He waited but no one would dare. Among the ranks of the mighty men, there walked a shepherd boy— not old enough to call him a man. He’d heard Goliath’s challenge. He’d watched God’s army run. He watched them but he could not understand. He said, “ Who is this man that he defies the name of God? Don’t you hear the things he’s said? I’ll go out against this blasphemy who mocks Jehovah’s name. My God will hand to me his head! He’ll hand to me his head!” The champion of the enemy laughed at what he saw; it was the smallest thing Jehovah had to give. The best that Satan had against the worst of all God’s men, but that sword just couldn’t stop that rock and sling. “Here lies the man who had defied the name of God, did you here the things he said? I’ve gone out against this blasphemy who mocks Jehovah’s name, My God has given me his head.” Today there stands a giant, who mocks Jehovah’s name, but his challenge falls on trembling ears. Day after day, the giant mocks Jehovah’s name, and it seems like there’s no one who cares. Don’t you know about this giant who defies the name of God? Our Lord has given you his head. Jesus went against this enemy; he brought the giant down— the champion has risen from the dead! He’s risen from the dead! | Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, "Why do you come out and line up for batt? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us." Then the Philistine said, "This day I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man and left us fight each other." I Samuel 17: 8-10. David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of air and the beasts of the earth and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel." I Samuel 17: 45-46. |
