My wife and I traveled back to my childhood hometown of Beaufort, SC and
took some pictures to represent the “homebound” premise behind this
collection of songs. The trip itself wasn’t exactly a “returning to my home.”
All of my childhood friends and family have moved away and everything has
changed so much that even the familiar places seem strange. Without friends
and family there, the trip wasn't much of a homecoming. I wasn't really
"homebound" until I was driving up my driveway at the end of the day.
Maybe that’s what happened to the prodigal son. The home that he had left
was a place where everyone was accepted and valued, where life was fulfilling
and meaningful. He searched and ended up in a place where life was anything
but good. Once the smell of pig slop broke him down, he realized that the
“good life” he had been seeking was back home at his father’s house all
along. I think the prodigal finally understood the definition of home when his
father came running up the path to greet him.
This is my story and it might be yours. Once, I tried to live a life outside of God’
s plans for me and ended up with pig slop on my plate. God intended for me
to have a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11) and an abundant, fulfilling life
(John 10:10) and I threw it all away with every choice I made.
The homebound prodigal is the one who finally realizes that he is a long way
from His Heavenly Father. I also learned that God is a God of second
chances and His mercy has no end. For all of us, it’s a prodigal situation and
there’s really only one thing left to do…
