James 3:3-12
When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.  Or take ships as an
example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever
the pilot wants to go.  Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great
forest is set on fire by a small spark.  The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts
the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.  All kinds of animals, birds,
reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is
a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of
the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.  Can both fresh water and salt water flow
from the same spring?  My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring
produce fresh water.

THE TONGUE
James 3:3-12

My words were launched like missiles,
an intentional attack.
The result was mass destruction
and no way to take it back.
It was more than I had bargained for.
This was never my intent.
Now I’m sifting through the rubble.  Regret is all that’s left.

Cause when the tongue takes control, nobody ever wins.
It paralyzes and tears apart your soul.
When the tongue has its way, a deadly poison sets in,
and by the time you realize what you’ve become,
the damage is already done.

There’s a path that leads to healing,
but it’s a long way from my home,
and there are rumors of forgiveness but the future is unknown.
If only I had thought it through, if I could do it all again,
but my journey leads through repentance.  It’s where I must begin.

I don’t like what I’ve become.  Change me, oh Lord.
Create in me a new heart—one that is filled with Your love.
Help me to let my words be few.  Help me to learn to think it through.
I want to listen with my heart.  I want to listen with your love.

Don’t let my tongue take control ‘cause I know nobody ever wins.
I don’t want to be paralyzed anymore.
Help me to tame my tongue before I really hurt someone.
Help me to be the man that I was meant to be.
I want to love as you would love.
